With the DCU’s next live-action series, The People V Gorilla Grodd, now filming, star Skyler Gisondo, reprising his role as Jimmy Olsen from Superman and the upcoming Man of Tomorrow, has been talking about the show and where it fits in the overall DCU timeline.
Gisondo seems confused about when exactly the series takes place, saying at first: “I think it’s somewhat before maybe the events of the movies.” Wait, it takes place before Superman?
“I think it’s sort of somewhere in between the two. I don’t know. I should probably know more about the answer, but I think the idea is it’s kind of almost adjacent to this main timeline, but before the events of the second movie.”
Ah, ok, so it takes place between Superman and Man of Tomorrow? In steps DCU co-boss James Gunn to clarify: “Well, no. I mean it’s a true crime series so it jumps all over the place. But overall in continuity it’s after MoT (and won’t come out until then).”
Right, so it takes place where it appears in the timeline – (mostly) after Man of Tomorrow. Ok Got it.

“I think this is really unlike anything we’ve seen in this world [DCU],” Gisondo goes on, “this Gorilla Grodd show, it’s very Lance / Primetime adjacent, this kind of true-crime mockumentary thing. It’s fun. You feel very free. Anything could happen at any time.”
The series will feature Jimmy Olsen interviewing Gorilla Grodd, left, (played here by Scream 7’s Jimmy Tatro), trying to work out how exactly this “super-intelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part ‘true’ crime docuseries, the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.”
The series will also see Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover and Wendell Pierce return as Perry White as Steve Lombard, Cat Grant and Perry White.
I know this is an odd choice for the next step in the DCU but I love that the DCU isn’t following any expected formula and is having fun with the characters, giving us a world where Lanterns can co-exist with The People V Gorilla Grodd alongside Clayface and then Superman. That feels like a comic universe to me.
