The Baba Yaga is coming back as long-reported John Wick animated movie sees Keanu Reeves return as the most feared hitman in the world.
The animated prequel will tell the story of how Wick completed the oft-mentioned ‘Impossible Task,’ which allowed him to leave his life as a hitman for the woman he loved, stepping away from the High Table by wiping out all his/their enemies in one night.
It could be argued that this isn’t something that needs to be shown but rather lives in the mythos of John Wick and that might be true but doing it in animation is very clever as it can lean into exaggeration and the myth of that world, while still giving us a stylishly violent and cool entry into Wick’s story. Also, Reeves is back as Wick, which rocks.
The movie will be directed by Kubo and the Two Strings’ Shannon Tindle, from a script by Ryan and Kaz Firpo and once again will be produced by 87Eleven Entertainment’s Chad Stahelski and Reeves.
Last year, Lionsgate’s motion picture chair Adam Fogelson said of the project: “In both animation and the world of John Wick, the possibilities are endless. And there is no John Wick story fans are clamoring for more than the ‘Impossible Task’.
“Shannon’s take on that story is an incredible one, and we are beyond excited to see what John Wick can do in animation.”
The new animated movie further expands the world of John Wick after last year’s Ballerina starring Reeves and Ana de Armas and the upcoming Caine, starring Donnie Yen. On top of this, there’s an open-world Wick game coming, a High Table TV series and potentially a fifth main Wick movie.
There’s also the Continental mini-series, but I’ll let you decide if that’s canon or not… and don’t even start me on the comic series.
I love John Wick, but even more, I love the world he inhabits and the lore and the rules that make it tick and I can’t wait to see just how far an animated Wick movie will push that and where it might lead.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
