Dave Filoni developing new Star Wars animated series

April 6th, 2013 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Star Wars: The Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni in his first interview since the Clone Wars cancelation announcement, talked with Rebel Force Radio. The interview comes shortly after the news of massive layoffs, and served to  reassure fans that something is in the works.

During the interview, Filoni was asked if he’ll continue with Star Wars animation, and replies, “Well, that’s my plan!”

Filoni also wanted fans to know that Star Wars is “obviously important to me and I’ve had a very great time working here. I’ve really helped build the animation division from when I got here and there were only a handful of people.”

Things took a somber tone as Filoni commented on the layoffs:

“It’s a function of our industry… It’s not my favorite part. You can luckily grow things and bring on many talented people, but there become times when you have to shrink things as well. We happen to be in one of those times right now, but that just paves the way, hopefully, for new things and new creativity in the future.”

Filoni’s comments on the tentatively titled bonus content for Clone Wars didn’t reveal much of note. But in talking about the previously released clip he does say that fans want to know more about Order 66, implying that it was not an easy choice for all clones. He could not say how much material will be released or when.

But there was good news to be has as well. There are two sides to the Force after all. It seems Disney is merely looking to put their own identity on Star Wars rather than do away with animated adventures all together. In regards to the new series, Filoni stated that it’s still early:

“At this point, I am involved in some early production discussions and exploration of what we’ll be doing with Star Wars animation in the future, which is really exciting for me and I have some friendly faces around me, of course, that are helping me on the project. So it’s a transition time, as I’ve said before, and I think it will lead to an exciting time and hopefully I’ll see things grow again.”

Of course there were no details on who the characters would be, whether it would be a continuation of The Clone Wars or even where the new series will take place in the Star Wars timeline. But there’s something is definitely in the works. I have two opinions on this. I would love to have something set in the Old Republic, that would be epic. But another part of me say that if it takes place after the Clone Wars, Filoni can cunningly touch upon plots and characters from the Clone Wars. One thing is certain, with Dave Feloni involved we have a champion of the fans.

What do you think? What time period would you like featured in the new animated series?
