FEATURE: What will be the coolest costume of 2013?

August 22nd, 2013 by Marc Comments

We all like a party, don’t we? No matter what the occasion is and when it takes place, spending a night or day in the company of those we love the most is great, but could it be better if we ‘dress up’? Halloween is coming up soon, which inevitably means one thing: a parade of people dressed up as their would-be alter egos storming every club and bar!

Last year, National Geographic revealed a list of the top costumes for the year, where Vampire costumes appeared within the top 3 most popular adult costumes. Surprisingly (or to no surprise at all), Superman costumes were nowhere to be seen on the list. This left me wondering whether there’s a correlation between box office successes (or general movie released over the year) and the characters that were at the top of our minds and ultimately inspired our costume choices.

…But then that does not quite explain why no one from the Avengers ensemble failed to make the list – I can’t be the only one who thinks this was one of the greatest movies of 2013. On the other hand, this does not altogether defeat my proposition, as I did see Batman characters at number four on the list, and that was a darned good AND memorable movie if you ask me.

Heroic effort

Superheroes have always been a pretty popular choice of garb for most Halloween revellers. Superheroes save the day, their cool, they’ve got cool alter ego lives and they always get the girl. With Man of Steel being the highest grossing Superman movie of all time and the new updated darker look, I doubt people will be forgetting about the new and improved Kal-El anytime soon…though I doubt anyone will be emulating Lois Lane!

Make your choice…

The general trend is for costumes’ popularity to follow what’s happening in the box office. It’s no coincidence that the release of films such as World War Z and Zombieland has seen zombie costumes go down a storm at Halloween parties, while vampire costumes remain pretty popular too, thanks largely to the Twilight series.

TV has played its part too. The Walking Dead and The Vampire Diaries have done a lot for both zombies and vampires, perhaps more than anything that’s appeared in the cinema! While Superman hasn’t yet been a huge hit on TV since Smallville, it’s only a matter of time before more people don the famous blue, red and yellow suit and cape!

Three and easy

It’s no certainty that people will be dressing like Superman in their droves. It’s likely that once again, hordes of people will be dressed like zombies, while there might be a few vampires around, but giving Superman a try might be a little more fun and original.
