Is there anyone out there who doesn’t like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Except my dad of course…
Years before Robert Zemeckis directed the awesome live-action/animated hybrid in 1988, an earlier adaptation of Gary K. Wolf’s book “Who Censored Roger Rabbit” was mooted at Walt Disney Studios between 1981 and 1983. Darrell Van Citters was set to direct, Paul Reubens was the voice of Roger Rabbit, Russi Taylor was the voice of Jessica Rabbit and one of the animators was Frozen director Chris Buck.
Now, an eight-minute video has been released going behind-the-scenes of this unmade adaptation.
The video also contains a number of concept art images (below), that show how vastly different the earlier versions of the characters were. While Roger was a villain in the book who was trying to solve his own murder, Roger here was a clown with white fur and red overalls, much like in the finished product. Jessica appears to be the villain and Baby Herman is only glimpsed. Still, this version clearly points towards the eventually realised Zemeckis film.
