It took 24 years but Eric Roberts is finally back as The Master

November 9th, 2020 by Marc Comments

For a couple of years now Eric Roberts, who played The Doctor’s nemesis, The Master, in the 1996 TV Doctor Who movie opposite Paul McGann but he has never actually appeared as the character in those 24 years.

Until now.

Fans of the movie, and Who lore in general, will recall that The Master, at the end of the movie, was trapped in the Eye of Harmony, within the TARDIS – of course, we know that he escaped at some point as we have met several regenerations since, but we’ve never known how he escaped. And maybe now we will find out.

Finally, we actually have the actor in the role for us to actually see… and it’s a welcome return for sure.

The new teaser (below) was released for Halloween – yes, sorry, I haven’t gotten it out sooner – and The Master talks about the night when “dark spirits abound and children learn to reveal in the things that scare them”. It is at this point he vows to escape… so presumably this message is coming from him while he’s still trapped in the TARDIS.

The new series called Master! will arrive in March 2021.

Abandoned in the Vortex, the Master’s lost incarnation is about to be thrown a lifeline.

Earth rebuilds in the aftermath of invasion, and power rests with those who innovate. Genius Lila Kreeg makes a deal with the devil to see her dreams fulfilled.

As the Master returns, there are those – like Vienna Salvatori – who wish to hunt him, and those upon whom he wishes vengeance himself…

If that’s not enough, Roberts will appear with fellow Master (and Missy) stars John Simm, Michelle Gomez and Derek Jacobi in Masterful… so if The Master is your cup of tea, your cup will spill over next year.

Anyway, here’s Roberts’ return to the role in the flesh:

Doctor Who starring Jodie Whittaker will return to BBC One for festive special Revolution of the Daleks this festive season.

And here’s the teaser for Masterful as well… enjoy…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
