Nightbreed: The TV series coming…

July 5th, 2014 by Marc Comments

Anyone remember the Clive Barker story Cabal, comic or movie? Anyone?

Ok, well, it was 25 years ago (!?) and the Nightbreed movie from Morgan Creek was something of an obscure ‘thing’… not really known enough to be a cult hit or good enough to be a hidden gem, it just sort of exists. Although there is a Cabal Cut of the movie coming this Halloween to bluray and DVD, so there must still be faith in the idea… especially since Morgan Creek also plan a new tv series which is currently in development.

Clive Barker has been talking about the series for a while now, believing – probably rightfully – that the movie was mishandled and never given a proper chance: “I don’t wish to be immodest but our culture has sort of caught up with Nightbreed and we’re actively in conversation about doing it for television. The general sense is that the movie failed because people didn’t want to associate with the monster. I think our culture is now more ready to embrace that ambiguity…”

Now Morgan Creek’s Michael Plumides has written four episodes of the series which will be overseen by Barker himself and comics legend Mark Millar.

Plumides said: “We’re staying true to the source material but also modernising the concepts to appeal to this millennium’s viewer. We think the fans will be very pleased. By incorporating great writing, character development, and mind-blowing practical and visual effects with a product that has achieved legendary cult status, we see a winner, especially in the absence of shows like True Blood, Fringe or even Sons of Anarchy. Barker’s vision is an amalgam of science-fiction, fantasy, and horror with violent, sexual overtones laced with dark comedy, and the Nightbreed series fires on all cylinders.”

No word yet on cast or when the show will air, but it seems there’s much love going into the writing… and that’s always a good place to start with the monsters of Midian.
