Yep, it’s happening again.
Once again, erstwhile fan favourite Battlestar Galactica is scheduled for another reboot. After its original run in 1978, single-series revival and critical failure Galactica 1980, the early 2000s reboot and two spinoffs, the franchise is apparently destined for the big screen.
Producer Michael De Luca (Dracula Untold) is to team with Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark of Bluegrass Films (Ted 2). Studio Universal is hoping that this will be the first part of a franchise. No word yet on prospective stars, director or writers but we’ll let you know when there is.
For anyone who’s not been paying attention for the last forty years, Battlestar Galactica tells the story of a single surviving battleship protecting a rag-tag refugee convoy of humans, survivors of the massacre of their colonies by the mechanical Cylons. Evading their robotic enemies, the humans are trying to find the long-lost colony known as Earth. There was originally a plan for a movie version back in 2009 when the SyFy series was coming to an end. Bryan Singer of X-Men and Usual Suspects fame was attached to the project, with several writers coming and going. It now seems that the project is getting off the ground.
I’ll be honest, I’m a bit ambivalent about this one. While I love the concept of the series and this new version could be great (providing there’s no resurrection of Moffett the Dagett, awful cybernetic pet thing of a precocious child played by a chimpanzee in a suit), it doesn’t feel like ten minutes since the series was last rebooted. Let’s see how this plays out…
