COMIC REVIEW: FTN reviews Night of the Living Deadpool #2

February 1st, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Writer: Cullen Bunn

Artist: Ramon Rosanas

Publisher: Marvel Comics

After the hilarious first issue of Night of the Living Deadpool, I could not wait to see what Cullen Bunn had in store for issue #2. It seems with every single Deadpool miniseries that he writes I am always itching to see what happens next and what I got was a great and funny homage to many of the popular undead stories from years past.

Picking up where issue one left off, Deadpool is with a group of survivors on their way to their safe zone. However, all is not well once they get there and see that the barricades that they had erected have been overrun and everyone dead. Deadpool knowing he is the last super-bro alive decides to look for survivors as that is what heroes do; he also narrates his search himself in true Deadpool fashion. However when they become overrun by the undead and their driver is killed the Merc with the Mouth puts himself behind the wheel to get the remaining survivors to safety. He also is very excited because now he has an El Camino and makes sure to tell his plans on how he will pimp it out.

Following this we get a homage to classic zombie movies and shows as they look for a safe place to stay. During these panels we get a look at a mall (Dawn of the Dead), a farmhouse (possibly Hershel’s farm from Walking Dead), a cabin in the woods (Evil Dead) and a prison (Walking Dead once again). Each place they go Deadpool gives his commentary on why he does not want to stay there, including at the farmhouse singing a line from the classic show Green Acres. Finally they reach what they feel is a safe place but once again all does not go as planned.

This issue was fantastic and once again Bunn brings us a hilarious story involving everyone’s favorite crazy in a setting we all have probably wished to see him in. There were so many references in this issue and so many times you actually thing Deadpool may be enjoying himself it is hard not to laugh when reading. Deadpool does exactly what we all come to expect and that is wisecrack through a catastrophe. Other than the homage’s to the other books my favorite part of the whole issue is when Deadpool is talking in his sleep and he is dreaming of himself being with Betty and Veronica of Archie comics. What was even funnier was when the dream switches to him and Miss Grundy and something in the dream involving baby oil. This had my mind spinning as I was picturing Deadpool in Archie and how much chaos he could cause in Riverdale.

Hmmm Deadpool meets Josie and the Pussycats??? Ok this must become a thing Mr. Bunn it MUST!

There was also some of what I think is foreshadowing as after a fight Deadpool is shown to have cuts on his arm, or bites I’m not sure which, and they heal due to his healing factor. Could he be the cure for this zombie apocalypse? I’m not sure if this was meant as foreshadowing but it really did catch my attention and made me think so I guess I will have to wait and see if I am right.

The ending to this issue will have you itching for the next issue. I am not going to spoil the ending but I did not see it coming. You think one thing and then it goes into the completely opposite direction. So Issue 3 cannot come soon enough for this guy.

If you loved the Deadpool Killogy then you will love this new series and everything that has gone into it. From the writing to the fantast art by Rosanas, this is a fantastic series.

So from Spin to all of you I give this issue an Undead
