War, Cover ups, and Conspiracies. What if everything that has happened over the last decade turned out to be a cover-up for something much, MUCH bigger? The first issue of Letter 44 deals with President-Elect Blade filling the former President Carroll’s shoes. (In a very Obama filling Bush’s shoes sort of way I might add!) Carroll, obviously, left much to be desired in his presidency. What the American people DON’T know is that every choice he made served towards a higher purpose…

Charles Soule continues to blow me away with his stories. Aside from Strange Attractors, this is the first original story I’ve read from him and it might be my favorite of his works already. By basing his stories on events that have actually happened, Soule tells a very special kind of fiction; the kind that feels like it could plausibly happen. By telling a tale that at it core hits so closely to home for so many of us, I found myself really invested in all the characters halfway through the issue.

Sci-fi books should have art to match the out-of-this-world story. The art in the first half of the book was excellent, but once we see the shots from space, I have to say, this book is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. There were moments towards the end of the book that I just had to stop and stare in awe of what I saw on the page. Big, bright colors in the dead, blackness of space may have created the best looking page in comics this year. (Wait until you see it! It’s the last page of the issue!)

Letter 44 is going to be something really special. Not often is something so out of this world so grounded in reality. The first print of this issue sold out, so those of you who prefer physical copies should go to your store NOW and order the second. If you don’t mind digital, it’s on Comixology for a mere .99 cents and it’s worth every penny. Hop on to this great, new series from one of the best up and coming writers in the industry!
