Guillermo Del Toro/Carlton Cuse created vampire series given 13 episodes.

Based on the 2009 novel by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, The Strain follows a group of scientists as they attempt to stop the spread of a vampiric virus that breaks out in New York. The book was originally envisioned by Guillermo del Toro as a TV series, but after initially failing to find interest and a financial agreement to make a pilot, began turning it into a series of books with writer Chuck Hogan, which were later adapted into comic book form.

A pilot was made with a cast including Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Kevin Durand, Miguel Gomez and John Hurt as Professor Abraham Setrakian, and now news comes of U.S. cable channel FX picking up The Strain for a first season of 13 episodes. Most of the cast remain intact, but John Hurt has been confirmed as not starring in the series, and that FX are looking to cast a suitable replacement to re-shoot his scenes from the pilot. It is not yet known if the already filmed pilot will be included in the 13 episodes or aired separately.

The Strain is planned to premier in the U.S. in July of next year.
