When DC rebooted their titles with The New 52, Kyle Higgins took over writing duties on Nightwing before moving on to writing Batman Beyond 2.0, a continuation of the comic and animated series. In January he joined the writing team for Batman Eternal. He also has his creator owned series with Image comics, C.O.W.L. which is co-written by Alec Siegel and featuring art by Rod Reis, revisits the world created by Higgins in The League. C.O.W.L. which debuts in May 2014.
Todd caught up with him at C2E2 2014…
FTN: I’m very honored to be joined by Kyle Higgins! At LEAST the number three guy at DC, behind only Geoff Johns and Scott Snyder… but it’s close!
KH: Why would you do that to me?!
FTN: I don’t know…
KH: Ok, this interview’s over…*laughs*
FTN: Interview’s over!!!…. No, but seriously, you are on a roll right now. You did one of the ultimate runs on Nightwing, you’re doing Batman Beyond, Batman Eternal, and you’re about to do C.O.W.L.
KH: These are… all things I am doing. It’s true. (continues after picture)
FTN: How does it feel being able to do all of this and knowing you’re being loved for it?
KH: Well, it’s nice when I can make rent each month, I will say that. It is a nice benefit. Yeah it’s cool, all of these projects are things that I’m passionate about and care about. They’re characters that I love. Nightwing is, and will always be, my favorite character, so I’m able to write him still in Batman Beyond.
FTN: And it’s awesome.
KH: Thank you. I’m working on Batman Eternal, where there’s a lot of good characters, I’m working with some really good friends on that, so that’s a blast. And now C.O.W.L…
Nightwing is, and will always be, my favorite character, so I’m able to write him still in Batman Beyond…
FTN: Yeah C.O.W.L., that’s your own comic right?
KH: Yeah, it’s going to be cool. It’s the Chicago Organized Workers League… I feel if I describe what C.O.W.L is one more time, Brian at the other table is going to gouge my eyes out.
FTN: Yeah you can’t really see but Brian is furious over there!
KH: But yeah, it’s coming out May 28th via Image, my first creator-owned book. I highly recommend it.
FTN: Very cool. Anything you want to say to the fans who’ve supported you throughout?
KH: Yeah, I appreciate and I’m honored for the opportunity to write these characters who I hold very dear to my heart; some of them are my favorites. And that there is support for me to write them means the world to me. I’m very grateful and it’s been really cool. So thank you, and I hope I’ve not been disappointing!
FTN: You are definitely not. I thank you for doing this with us.
KH: No problem, thank you.
