Avengers: Infinity War may still be two years away from happening, but two of Marvel’s favourite sons have already been confirmed to appear. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have clarified that Thor and Star-Lord will both be part of the mission to take down big baddie Thanos.

Speaking with ComicBook.com (via Squareeyed), the Russos (who have also directed Captain America: Civil War) said that Infinity War will act as the conclusion of many of the major characters’ story arcs, while also introducing entirely new members as well.

Anthony Russo said: “The movies are intended to be a culmination of everything that’s happened before in the MCU so you don’t want to get into spoilers but I’m a big fan of what James Gunn has done. [Joe Russo and I] are both big fans of what James Gunn has done. Star-Lord is a fantastic character and Chris Pratt is an awesome performer so you’d be very excited.”

Joe Russo added: “I’m excited to work with Thor. They’re doing some really interesting stuff with Ragnarok and where he’s gonna be at the beginning of Infinity War is gonna be a very interesting place and I think very profound. I think he’s gonna have a real emotional motivation after that.”

The Russos also teased that Thor: Ragnarok – due to be released in 2017 – will be a pivotal film in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe context. This does perhaps suggest that Thor may suffer a devastating personal loss during Ragnarok (which incidentally means the end of the Universe in Norse mythology).

Whatever happens in Thor: Ragnarok, it’ll be exciting to see Chris Hemsworth line up alongside Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord in Infinity War. The two of them on screen will certainly make for some excellent, light-hearted chemistry as two of the quippiest superheroes in the cosmos.

The next adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is of course Captain America: Civil War, which is finally released at the end of this month on April 29.
