Deadline is reporting that Fox has hired Danny Cannon to direct and executive produce the pilot for their upcoming DC comic TV series Gotham. Cannon is no stranger to TV pilots having helmed them for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Nikita, and The Tomorrow People, and he’s also worked in the realm of comic book movies before as he directed the 1995 Judge Dreddfilm starring Sylvester Stallone.
Under development from The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, Gotham will focus on a young James Gordon in Gotham City years before Bruce Wayne puts on the Batman cape and cowl, though it appears a young Bruce will appear along with the potential for a few of his future villains.
First appearing in “Detective Comics” #27 (the 1939 comic that also debuted Batman), Commissioner James Gordon is the creation of Bill Finger and Bob Kane. He was previously played on the 1960′s Batman television show by Neil Hamilton. Gary Oldman (above) most recently portrayed the character in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.
