Djimon Hounsou cast in David Yates’ Tarzan

June 5th, 2014 by Edwin Torres Jr 1 Comment

According to Deadline Djimon Hounsou has joined the cast of WB’s Tarzan as Chief Mbonga, a character that appeared in a number of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original stories.

Featuring a screenplay by Stephen Sommers and Stuart Beattie, the live-action film will adapt Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1912 book “Tarzan of the Apes” but is rumored to pick up at a point well past Tarzan’s origin story, instead following the hero after having returned to and been assimilated by British civilization of the era. The action will then follow the Burroughs hero on a mission into the Congo under orders from Queen Victoria.

Directed by David Yates the cast includes Alexander Skarsgård as the titular hero along with Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz.

Tarzan swings into theaters on July 1st, 2016.

With Warner Bros. backing and David Yates at the helm, this movie has the
potential to be a blockbuster hit. They’ll at least be on the right track if
they distance themselves from the old Tarzan movie format. The assembled cast
is good except for the lead role. Alexander Skarsgard does not fit the image of
Tarzan. This role needs a more athletically muscular, ruggedly handsome actor
with darker complexion and black hair.
Edgar Rice Burroughs’ tale is a
powerful fantasy about a young man with high intelligence and great physical
strength and speed. He was possessed with instincts and senses of a wild
beast. With these endowments he rose above the other creatures of the jungle
and ruled his environment. This is what should be dramatized and brought to
    movie audiences.
