E3 Conference Report: Bethesda

June 15th, 2015 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

BethesdaBethesda were the second company off the E3 starting blocks, just a week behind Ubisofts Assassins Creed reveal, with a teaser for Doom that had me slightly concerned about where they were heading with it. They followed that up with a teaser, then in short order a full on trailer for Fallout 4, which had some speculating that the teaser had been a mistake. The conference opened with a montage of all the people who work in the various studios Bethesda own claiming to be very happy to be working there, like they’d say anything different!

Fallout is one of Bethesdas biggest franchises so a lot of hype has been floating around about what we were to see during the conference, mainly as there were gameplay videos rumoured to be revealed. Those rumours proved to be true. It turns out the game has been in production for the last four years and they have built a beautiful looking game world. the game itself starts, in a suburb outside Boston, just before the inevitable nuclear war.

They have created a new and fantastic character creation interface and they revealed you can play as a female character if you want.  Not only that but the couple you form will have a kid that takes after whatever traits you chose for your facial traits. that’s just a taste of the level of detail involved in this game!

.
It is absolutely massive and I have only so much room, there’s a crafting mode that lets you build a settlement and start running a civilisation. Crafting applies to the 50 base weapons too with over 700 modifications.

.
The biggest pop is for the Pit boy collector edition with an app, works with any platform and your phone, the second screen app is also downloadable for standard smartphones alongside that thy launched a free app called Fallout Shelter, launch as in it is in the App store right now!

Release Date: November 10th 2015

The main reason yours truly volunteered for this graveyard shift of a detail (the conference started at 3am my time ) was to see what they were going to reveal about the new Doom game.

It’s going to be a fast paced frantic shooter in the main part with all the traditional weapons (Super Shotgun, BFG, Chainsaw etc.) but as well as little touches reminiscent of the spookiness of my favourite Doom game Doom3. Besides the new level of graphics the real new addition is the up close melee finishers, gory moves straight out of Mortal Kombat creators nightmares.

.
The Multiplayer looks like a bit of fun too 🙂

.
That’s not the biggest thing however, Snapmap allows players to make their own levels and play modes . Once built it’s a single button press to share them, this mode will be available on all platforms. Think an even better version of the Forge app in the Halo.

Estimated release date Spring 2016

We knew something was going to be presented by Arkane Studios (the Dishonored developers) during the conference due to a technical error with a an open microphone during a test run of the stream. We were also lead to expect a joke of some sort, it appeared and it was sad. Rumour had it the presentation was going to be a sequel and that turned out to be true. The main character this time around you can play as Corvo or Emily Caldwin, giving a female main character to the franchise. Something Ubisoft could learn from!

Elder Scrolls online has just hit the PS$ and XBox one so there wasn’t going to be much in the way of new things for it. They basically gave a sneak peak of the Imperial city and a few other locations that will become available some time in the coming year in Tamriel Unlimited.

.
They also gave a sneak peek at a mobile platform version of a mobile version of The Elder Scrolls: Legends which will be a free to play strategy card PC and mobile platforms

.
Over all the conference was a great start to E3., superbly detailed presentation, apps being launched there and then. Most noticeably was the emphasis being placed on playable female main characters. it looks like at least one games company has gotten the memo. Hopefully the other companies will start fixing that now.
