A Forest in Somerset, England has become something altogther magical… at least for the time being.

Tiny doors – like the ones pictured here – have mysteriously appeared at the base of the trees in the area, reportedly put there by the adults so the children can “leave messages for the fairies”.

However, the magic comes with a cost. And a penalty too. Trustee Steven Acreman said: “We’ve got little doors everywhere. We’re not anti-fairies but it’s in danger of getting out of control.”

Originally an extension of nearby Wayford Manor Gardens, the 29 acres of woodland boasts a stream, meadow and ornamental lake.

The first door appeared in 2000: “It fitted perfectly, it had a little turned handle and inside was a bed. We didn’t know who had done it but we left it there,” said Acreman.

At last count the doors were up to 200, many of which have little gifts and messages behind them, but it is getting out of hand and, sadly, something must be done: “We’ve had as many as 10 doors put up on a single tree; they surrounded the tree; It’s a very complex situation and nobody’s admitting that they’re evicting the fairies,” he said.

“It’s just that fairy control is required otherwise we’d be covered in fairy doors. We put a lot of time into the conservation of the woods. We’re trying to keep people to the paths but the fairy doors are making it a free-for-all,” he concluded.

We love the idea of this; it’s wonderful, magical and so sweet and innocent, but we have to say that, at the end of the day, the conservation of the trees is paramount. So, if you’re plannnig on making a fairy door, we ask you to reconsider. It sounds like the neighbourhood is plenty crowded already…

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
