First look at Sir Ben Kingsley’s Mazer in Ender’s Game

May 1st, 2013 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

We dont have much on Ender’s Game…yet. But here’s our first look at Sir Ben Kingsley as Mazer Rackham in the Gavin Hood directed adaptation of Orson Scott Card‘s Ender’s Game. Rackham trains Ender in the movie. Here’s what Kingsley had to say about his character in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“In the script, which I think is beautifully written, what come across is the authority and mystery. There’s quite a lot said about him in the story  before you see him — by the recruits and by his fellow officers — and that’s useful as far as preparations.”

He goes on to talk about his face tats:

“Every gesture in the tattoo carries family history, family struggles – it’s your past. I was so enthralled. He’s in quite a contained, stylized uniform but then this wonderful face tells his warrior history.”

“In the near future, a hostile alien race called the Formics have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young minds to find the future Mazer.

Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy but strategically brilliant boy, is recruited to join the elite.  Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult challenges and simulations, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham himself to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.”

The movie also stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Viola Davis, Nonso Anozie,Stevie RayDillmore, Andrea Powell, Moises Arias, Conor Carroll, Aramis Knight, Brendan Meyer, Jimmy “Jax”Pinchak, Suraj Parthasarathy, and Khylin Rhambo.

The movie is set to be released in theaters in IMAX on November 1st, 2013.
