Industry legend John Williams (Composer of so many classic scores it’s not even worth starting to list them) is to receive the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award at the 44th AFI ceremony.
When I heard this news, the first thing to come into my head was, “Wait! He hasn’t got one already”? This man is a legend in the film industry, crafting classic film soundtracks for almost 50 years. He has worked with titans of the industry and is respected by everyone, so how is this only happening now. With all of this in mind, I think you can tell that I think he absolutely deserves this award, and it is a crime that he has not received it before this point.
Sir Howard Stringer, chair of the AFI board of trustees, stated at this announcement that, “John Williams has written the soundtrack to our lives… Note by note, through chord and chorus, his genius for marrying music with movies has elevated the art form to symphonic levels and inspired generations of audiences to be enriched by the magic of the movies”.
Truer words have never been spoken, and it is truly uplifting to hear that John Williams, will now stand along such greats as Mel Brooks, Mike Nichols, Steve Martin and Michael Douglas, in the history of the AFI.
