Peter Jackson has presented a range of special features from the forthcoming The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug at a surprise presentation over the weekend.

Joined by stars Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Lee Pace, Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd, and Dominic Monaghan, Jackson showed off new concept art, behind-the-scenes video, and a scene from the film.

JoBlo is reporting that the director showed off art of Elvish stronghold of Thranduil’s realm in Mirkwood as well as some set footage of Legolas (Bloom) and Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly). The New Zealander said: “We’re quite excited about the storyline we have created for Tauriel. As you can see, she’s not an Elf Guard to be messed with. Also, we really needed some female characters in these movies. There are like, almost none.”

Jackson also showed some behind-the-scenes footage of Lake Town where we see the town’s master (Fry) and the heroic Bard the Bowman (Evans).

Fans were then shown a new scene from the film where Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Radagast the Brown (Sylvester McCoy) investigate Dol Goldur.

Finally, the director confirmed that the first trailer is due out this summer.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
