James D’Arcy joins Agent Carter as Edwin Jarvis!

September 17th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

According to The Wrap, James D’Arcy (Cloud Atlas, Let’s Be Cops) is the latest to join the cast of Marvel’s Agent Carter . D’Arcy will be a regular on the upcoming series and play Howard Stark’s butler, Edwin Jarvis.

We first learned Jarvis would be showing up at this year’s SDCC.

Jarvis first appeared in Tales of Suspense #59 (November 1964), and was created by Stan Lee and Don Heck. In Marvel Comics, Edwin Jarvis was butler to the Starks, and then to the Avengers when Tony Stark donated Avengers Mansion to the team as a headquarters. Since the 1990s, the character has appeared heavily in media adaptations of Iron Man and Avengers stories, and is commonly reimagined as “Just a Rather Very Intelligent System” (J.A.R.V.I.S.), not a butler but an AI which assists Iron Man.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, J.A.R.V.I.S. made his first “appearance” in 2008’s Iron Man, voiced by Paul Bettany.

For Tony Stark to later name his AI after Jarvis, they must have had a very special relationship.

Other recent cast additions include Enver Gjokaj as Agent Daniel Sousa and Chad Michael Murray as Agent Jack Thompson.

Marvel’s Agent Carter, starring Captain America’s Hayley Atwell, follows the story of Peggy Carter. It’s 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life–Steve Rogers.

Marvel’s Agent Carter is written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Executive producers are Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas, Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, Chris Dingess, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Joe Quesada, Stan Lee and Jeph Loeb. Marvel’s Agent Carter is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

Agents Carter will premiere in January 2015 on ABC. Atwell’s Agent Carter will first appear in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD in the show’s Season 2 premiere.
