James Gunn will direct Guardians of the Galaxy 2 if the first “does well”

July 19th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters in less than two weeks, and last night select media had a chance to see the first media screening. So far reactions seem very positivewhich is great for Disney and Marvel Studios, since SDCC is coming up next week. Just yesterday 5 dates for mystery Marvel movies through 2019 were announced, and I’d imagine a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel is part of that lineup.

Writer and director James Gunn went on the The Adam Corolla Show, warnings for language. Gunn spoke about Guardians of the Galaxy, how he got the gig and what’s next. He’s been offered some films already, but if Guardians is as successful as we all expect it to be, he’ll be busy with the sequel:

“I’m actually in a somewhat weird position because if the movie does well, the I’m gonna make the sequel. And if it does okay then, well, I’ve already been offered other movies but I can only do those other movies if I don’t do the sequel, so it’s a weird situation.”

Marvel has 3 dates in 2017, the same year as WB’s Justice League, May 5th, July 28th and November 3rd. If one of these dates is for Guardians 2, that would give Gunn a break and three years to develop the sequel.

Jump to the 52:40 mark to hear from James Gunn.
