March 20th, 2013 by Marc Comments

Horror author James Herbert has died aged 69, his publisher has confirmed.

Mr Herbert, who wrote horror classics such as The Rats and The Fod, died peacefully in bed at his home in Sussex, England.

He is survived by his wife Eileen, whom he married in 1967, and their three daughters Kerry, Emma and Casey.

Tributes to the author were led by Jeremy Trevathan, a Macmillan publisher, who said: “Jim Herbert was one of the keystone authors in a genre that had its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s.

“It’s a true testament to his writing and his enduring creativity that his books continued to be huge bestsellers right up until his death.

“He has the rare distinction that his novels were considered classics of the genre within his lifetime. His death marks the passing of one of the giants of popular fiction in the 20th century.”

Mr Herbert’s work has been published in 34 languages including Russian and Chinese and has sold over 54 million copies worldwide, his publishers said.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
