New promo artwork for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

August 18th, 2013 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Thanks to Bleeding Cool we’ve got some new artwork for The Desolation of Smaug. The first piece with Bilbo’s reflection in the eye of Smaug the dragon should come as no surprise. The image of the iconic barrel sequence promises to be more of an action sequence than novel, as hinted at by the arrows in the barrel.

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

The movie stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Graham McTavish, Ken Stott, Aidan Turner, Dean O’Gorman, Mark Hadlow, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Peter Hambleton, William Kircher, James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter, Luke Evans, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters on December 13 of this year while The Hobbit: There and Back Again concludes Jackson’s second Tolkien trilogy on December 17, 2014.
