Work has begun on season 3 of the highly acclaimed BBC series Sherlock.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, respectively, however until now we haven’t known what books the new series would be based on.

Executive producer Mark Gatiss has taken to Twitter to reveal the title of the first episode and, subsequently, plot details have also surfaced by way of the Arthur Conan Doyle source material for the story.

Gatiss posted the above picture with the tweet:

“Exclusive! Ep 1 will be called ‘The Empty Hearse’. The game is on! #Sherlock”

Metro adds that the first episode of season three will indeed be based on the original Doyle story The Adventure Of The Empty House, which explains the return of Sherlock following his apparent demise.

So there you have it. Has anyone read The Adventure of The Empty House? Is it a good story to adapt? As ever, let us know your thoughts.
