SPONSORED POST: Understanding the League of Legends Ranking Systems

July 29th, 2021 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game where players control a single champion and fight against each other in fast-paced matches. The goal of the game is to destroy your opponent’s base while defending your own. Players are given points for scoring kills or helping their team score kills, which will rank them up on different tiers.

Here is a rundown about how these ranking systems work and what they mean for you.

The L0L Ranking System

The LoL ranking system is based on a numerical scale. This scale is divided into seven different divisions. The names of these divisions are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, and Challenger. Every division has its own numerical value that indicates the skill level in LoL corresponding to it. For instance, a player who’s ranked as a “challenger” means they have reached the highest rank. MOBA Champion notes that the rankings you see on a player’s profile page come from their most recently ranked games they have played (with some exceptions).

Winning or Losing Games Determines Rankings

You will rank up each time you win a game and lose points each time you lose one. The number of points you lose or gain depends on how much lower or higher you are in rank than your opponent. The only exception to this is when winning a ranked game while playing as an unranked account. In this case, you will gain no experience, which means that it’s possible to play through the whole game without gaining any points. Additionally, when you first start playing ranked games, the system places you in a league based on your skill level and can place all new players into Bronze.

To Rank, Players Must Earn Enough League Points

Players must earn enough league points by winning games to reach each next tier. The higher the rank, the more difficult it is to maintain a high ranking. Players who rise in ranks are quickly matched with players of higher skill levels and lose their best matches faster than new players do at lower tiers, where they have time to learn how to play.

Players can earn points by winning games, receiving honors from teammates and opponents for sportsmanship or clever plays. There are also opportunities to earn achievements in the game, and complete missions set by Riot Games to unlock new content.

Individual Performance Matters in Team Play

If your team wins but your individual performance was not good enough, you may drop down in ranking for that particular week or series of matches. Players are rated on an Elo-based system. This ranking system assigns points based on the outcome of a match against another player or team. The higher the score you have against your opponent and their skill level, the more points you will earn. For example, if you win easily (depending on the number of participants) points are usually in the range of 100-200, whereas if you win after a hard-fought battle, points may be anywhere from 500 to over 1,000.

You Can Rank by Playing Ranked Games With Friends

Players can also gain league points by playing ranked games with their friends against other teams of similar skill level. The way ranked games work is that each player on the team will be assigned a rank. One person may have their league points go up while another’s points could go down, so it’s important to make sure you’re playing with friends who want to stay at your level and not carry or drag you through ranking tiers. In typical ranked games, players will be matched with people who are using the same champions.

League of Legends Tier Lists for Even Better Play

Since the release of League, many players have found themselves wondering how exactly they should go about playing in ranked games. What are the best champions for newbies? Which roles are best suited to my personal tastes and play style? How do I know if it’s time to climb up or take a break from ranked gameplay? These questions can be difficult to answer.

We’ve found that many players find League of Legends tier lists an excellent way to get started with ranked gameplay. Also, it can be a lot of fun playing in some high-stakes matches because ranked games offer the chance to rank up quickly, gain more points than normal games, and even qualify for a league tournament.
