It looks like Warner Bros have found their new Willy Wonka.
We’ve known for a while that a new take on Roald Dahl’s iconic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is in the works and, following in the footsteps of Gene Wilder and, em, Johnny Depp, finding the new Wonka was always going to be the hard part.
As the new movie was being set up as an origins story for the character, we knew that a younger actor was being sought and now we know that Dune star Timothée Chalamet has nabbed the lead in the Roald Dahl Story Co’s new movie, Wonka.
“Based on characters created by Roald Dahl, the story will focus on a young Willy Wonka and his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory. Sources also tell Deadline that Wonka will mark the first time Chalamet gets to show off his singing and dancing skills with several musical numbers set to appear in the film. He’s been the top choice for some time but scheduling was a hurdle that had to be overcome as training for those numbers is included in the prep for this film.”
The movie will be directed by Paddington’s Paul King from a script he wrote with Simon Farnaby.
We all know that Chalamet is now the third actor to take on the role but it will be Wilder’s timeless performance 1971 performance, rather than Johnny Depp’s effort in 2005. But can the young actor step up to fill those chocolate-covered (I don’t know!) shoes? We’ll all know in the next couple of years, I’d guess.
