Your Guide to Changing Display Names in Video Games

December 29th, 2022 by The Nerd Comments

Your gamer tag says a lot about you. If you wish to show your funny side, a play on words or an obscure comedy reference usually works.

When it comes to changing your nickname, most games are pretty straightforward and let you switch the name in the settings, for example. In more obscure instances that are rare, users go as far as installing mods and tinkering with in-game files. Options to show all files on a computer to access hidden data allow for customization.

However, the problem with that approach is that you risk messing up the files and experiencing technical difficulties. Thus, it is probably for the best to stick to more traditional methods of changing your in-game name and still making sure that it is unique.

A Suggestion to Use Custom Fonts

The uniqueness does not have to come just from the letters or symbols used in the tag. You can also make use of tools that allow you to generate a nickname with a custom font.

Instead of plain-looking Mountain King, for example, you could have the game display your name as , , M̥̽o̥̽u̥̽n̥̽t̥̽ḁ̽i̥̽n̥̽ K̥̽i̥̽n̥̽g̥̽.

Not all video games allow the freedom to customize your gamer tag with custom fonts, but there are exceptions, which we will cover below.

Changing Display Name in Fortnite

Fortnite stands as one of the most popular battle-royale video games. Some players might be put-off by the game’s graphics, but the concern usually disappears after a couple of skirmishes and getting used to the visuals.

To change your gamer tag on Fortnite, launch Epic Games website and log in to your account. On the right side of the screen, you will see the Account button. Click on the button and go to General. Here, you will find Display Name, which is under the Account Info tab. A white pencil in a blue background next to the Display Name is the edit button.

Click the edit button and paste the unique gamer tag. You will need to confirm the change by pressing the Confirm button. Note that Epic Games store allows users to change the gamer tag once every two weeks. If you want to adjust it again, there will be a cooldown period that you have to wait for.

Unlike on Xbox or PS4, changing your Fortnite name on macOS or Windows is free, so you do not have to worry about extra charges to your Epic Games account.

Changing Display Name in Roblox

Roblox is an online gaming platform that encourages its users to create video games and share them with others. There are thousands of different games to try.

Roblox has two different names: Your main handle, also known as Username, and the Display Name (what other players see in the game).

If you create an account on Roblox and want to change your Username, you will need to pay about 15 dollars for every change. Changing the Display Name, on the other hand, is free, though it comes with a cooldown that lasts an entire week, so keep that in mind.

To make your Roblox Display Name unique and show it off to other gamers, open the Roblox home page and click on the gear icon. Choose the Settings tab and click the edit button near the Display Name.

If you used a custom font generator to create your new Display Name, copy it and paste it in the tab. To finish, click the save button. Now, you can enjoy a unique Display Name while playing on the Roblox gaming platform.

Changing Display Name in Steam

Similar to Roblox, Steam also has a Display Name and a username. The latter is used when creating your account, and it does not appear to other players.

What you want to focus on is the Display Name. The handle is visible to other platform users whenever you are playing multiplayer games or engaging with the platform by commenting in the forums or publishing your video game reviews.

In Steam, click on your Display Name that is located at the top-right corner of the home page. Next, go to Profile and click the Edit button. Copy the generated name and post it in the Profile Name box. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page to make the changes.

Changing Display Name in Discord

As far as voice communication platforms for gaming go, Discord is the most popular option. You can modify your display name on it as well. Moreover, Discord lets you have different names on different servers. You just have to go to the Edit Server Profile tab and adjust the Nickname tab for individual servers.

If you want to apply the same display name look on multiple servers, you will have to do it manually for each server. While Discord offers a User Profile tab, it only lets you change your avatar, banner, and About Me section.
