Ben Affleck won’t make the Batman movie until he’s convinced it’ll be truly ‘iconic’

While we’re all very excited for the just announced Gotham City Sirens and all the awesome output from DC/Warners including Justice League, Wonder Woman, Flash and Aquaman, it’s probably true to say that the one we’re all most excited for is Ben Affleck’s standalone Batman outing.

Actor Joe Manganiello, who will play Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in the film, has described talking to Affleck about the movie: “When I met Ben we sat down and we talked about, you know, the role. We talked about the movie. His take is a fresh take but I think the audience is going to be surprised. Because it’s a road that no one’s really gone down that’s completely integral to, you know, who Batman is”.

But when will we see it? Well, Warners have announced that James Wan’s Aquaman will fill the October 5th 2018 slot so this leaves July 27th 2018 is now free and, yes, you guessed it, everyone is penning in the Batman movie for that date.

Manganiello also said they are due to start shooting in spring 2017.

However, don’t get too excited just yet because writer/director/star Ben Affleck has been chatting to The NY Times and has made it clear he’s not bringing the world a new Batman movie until it’s suitably ‘iconic'”

“We still have to get a screenplay and get it together. … I’m a real believer in not reverse-engineering projects to meet a window or a date, but rather when you get the right story, when the right idea, when the right thing, then you make the movie. That’s what we’re doing, and I’m hoping to get that done. I’m spending a lot of time working on that, but also working on other stuff,” says Affleck.

“If I could, if I could find it right, there’s nothing I’d love more than to direct a standalone, iconic, great Batman movie. But it’s been done. Chris Nolan did three really great movies. I’m really mindful of that. I’m in not any hurry to jam the mediocre movie down the pipe. I really want to make sure that, if we do it, we get the great version and one that’s worthy of the tradition of guys like Tim Burton, Chris Nolan and Christian Bale.”

So, if Affleck is in no particular hurry, could this slate be for Gotham City Sirens? Hmmmmmmmm…

Thoughts?
