BREAKING: Game of Thrones creators writing new Star Wars trilogy

February 6th, 2018 by Marc Comments

Holy crap! This is pretty big news, Star Wars fans!

While we currently have the core Star Wars Saga – no entrusted to Rey, Kylo Ren and co – alongside the Anthology movies – Rogue One and Solo so far –  and the recently announced Rian Johnson trilogy (here), it seems we now have a whole new trilogy coming.

The official Star Wars website has just announced that Game of Thrones TV creators David Benioff and DB Weiss will be writing and producing a new Star Wars trilogy that will be a separate entity from the other movies already in production/planning stages. (Continues after pic)

While nothing is known about the movies we reckon there will be a time in the near future where we have:

The Episodes: The Skywalker Story and beyond
The Anthology: Based around characters and events we already know, filling in some blanks.
The Johnson Trilogy:  Based around the little boy at the end of The Last Jedi, this could be a Jedi Academy story.
The GoT Trilogy: Old Republic set tales of the Jedi and Sith.

We’re just speculating of course, but wouldn’t it be fun? We also reckon that, come the end of the current trilogy – i.e. Episode IX – we could live in a world where we get two Star War movies a year: approximately every six months.

Here’s the full press release:

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away.

It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

No release dates have been set for the new films, and there have (thankfully) been no sightings of White Walkers around Lucasfilm.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
