With recent rumors swirling about another big-screen Ghostbusters adventure, Carrie Coon was asked about her potential return as Callie Spengler, revealing that Jason Reitman previously had an idea for where things could go next, writes Jason from Ghostbusters News.

Speaking with ScreenRant’s Ben Gibbons at the 2026 BFI London Film Festival, Coon admitted she hasn’t recently checked in with the franchise’s creative team, saying, “I haven’t reached out,” while noting that Reitman “had an idea a long time ago.”

As for what that idea might involve, Coon didn’t offer any story details, instead noting Reitman’s busy schedule and sharing that the two have joked about her character’s future: “He’s very busy restoring all the theaters in LA, or at least his own theater.

“So, I’m not sure what he has planned. We always joke that I’ll be dead, and I’ll just be a nagging ghost, but we’ll see if that’s the plan.”

Despite recent rumors, Coon’s remarks offer no firm indication of when, or if, the Spengler family might suit up again, leaving a potential follow-up to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire firmly in rumor territory.

Fans can look forward to the franchise’s return to animation, with Ghostbusters: Night Shift coming exclusively to Netflix next year. Set in New York City in 1994, five years after the events of Ghostbusters II, the series follows a new group of young New Yorkers who find themselves facing a supernatural threat, with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan among its executive producers.

Alongside Night Shift, an untitled animated Ghostbusters feature is also in development from Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix. Details on that project remain limited, with no release date announced.
