Cathy Yan wants a Birds of Prey sequel featuring Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy’s relationship

April 7th, 2020 by Marc Comments

I know it’s one of those things that if you say it you can be opening the doors for a lot of grief but I’m going to say it… Birds of Prey (and the Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) wasn’t very good; not only was it not very good, it was a disaster at the boxoffice – and no, you can’t blame that damned virus because it was one of the last things I saw on the big screen weeks before the world locked down and I was late to the party.

With that said, I did like it well enough and would love to see more of the characters set up in it, in particular Jurnee Smollet-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Black Canary and Huntress respectively and I loved Ewan McGregor as Black Mask but, let’s be honest, his character was under utilised and, more criminally, let’s just say it’s unlikely we’ll see him again in the DCEU.

But one thing I do not expect is a sequel because the movie just reeked of disappointment.

And yet, director Cathy Yen seems adamant that a sequel is still a possibility and she has ideas where she’d like it to go.

“I would love to see Poison Ivy and I would certainly love to see the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy,” she said.

While I would love to see Harley and Ivy done well on the big screen, it’s worth pointing out that the first movie didn’t even do the Birds of Prey justice, with the super team feeling like an after thought in the their own movie.

Yan goes on: “I don’t know — I think people aren’t ready to let go of Harley Quinn quite yet and you know, Margot I don’t think is ready to let go of Harley Quinn yet either, so… hopefully.”

Firstly, Harley is set to appear in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel (yes, it is a same-universe follow-up) so we’re far from done with her and, as well as that, no-one is arguing that they want to see Harley (Margot Robbie) back on our screens, but audiences made it clear that they don’t care to see her in the Birds of Prey movie. I can only imagine the same would go for a sequel, however unlikely.

What say you all? Would you like a BoP sequel? Or would you rather see the Harley/Ivy relationship given the development it deserves – let’s be honest, as fun as it was, BoP was not worried about developing anything – in a standalone movie?

Personally, I’d like to see it told over a couple of movies where we get Leto back as Joker and the story of their breakup told in more than an animated segment at the start of a movie.

Anyway, will we see more of Cathy Yan’s work in the DCEU? Let me know your thoughts…
