Get ready because pretty soon you’re going to have the need… the need for speed for a third time as it looks like Top Gun 3 is getting ready to start ramping up now that Cruise is (maybe) done saving the world with IMF.
While we all still bask in the warmth of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, it seems that writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and star Tom Cruise already have their next franchise installment set up and it involves very, very fast fighter jets.
While it took the guts of 40 years to make Top Gun: Maverick, Top Gun 3 will be arriving much sooner, it seems. A few weeks back, when asked about the third movie in the series, Cruise said: “We’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible.”

It seems they’ve moved well past that stage now.
When asked on the Happy Sad Confused podcast is he’s finding it difficult writing Top Gun 3, McQuarrie nonchalantly replied: “No, it’s already in the bag. I’ve cracked it.”
McQuarrie and Ehren Kruger wrote Top Gun: Maverick, the movie which, and this is not hyperbolic, saved cinema after that damned virus almost destroyed the industry, and the duo are back for this one: “That’s a good place to go from. You walk into the room going, ‘Come on, what are we going to do?’ And Ehren Kruger pitched something, and I went ‘Mmm, actually.’ And then we had one conversation about it. The framework is there, so no, it wasn’t hard to crack.”
So, there you have it, Ethan Hunt may be stepping down but LT Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is getting ready to get back in that jet. And that’s fine by us here are FTN HQ.
No word on when the movie will be filming, let alone releasing, but we’ll keep you posted, guys.
Thoughts? I know you have ’em and I wanna hear ’em all.
