Warner Bros boss Toby Emmerich has been talking about the success of Aquaman and what it means for the future of the DC Universe.
Paradoxically, it seems that he believes it reveals shared universes aren’t the way to go with the franchise.
“We all feel like we’ve turned a corner now. We’re playing by the DC playbook, which is very different than the Marvel playbook. We are far less focused on a shared universe. We take it one movie at a time. Each movie is its own equation and own creative entity. If you had to say one thing about us, it’s that it always has to be about the directors.”
Now, we think what he means is that each movie can stand on its own – much as Aquaman, Man of Steel and Wonder Woman did and won’t be so worried about crossing with other characters.
However, it may also mean that they plan on more movies like the upcoming Joker, which exists within its own runtime only.
Either way, the reference to letting the directors be the focus is very heartening and certainly harkens back to the studio’s motto when BvS was about to be released.
Paradoxically, there’s a rumour online that there’s a planned Harley Quinn trilogy starting with the upcoming Birds of Prey, leading into Gothma City Sirens and then crossing the two over… but for now, we’ll file that under a big ‘maybe’.
