DidJared Leto try to stop Todd Phillips’ Joker movie?

October 21st, 2019 by Marc Comments

There’s a rumour going around that Jared Leto, who played Joker in Suicide Squad, was unhappy with Joaquin Phoenix’s standalone, alternate take on the character.

Now, I’m reporting this because it’s potentially big news from the world of the Joker and I’ll give my thoughts at the end of the article.

The reports of Leto being frustrated by Todd Phillips’ Joker movie are likely true… after all, Leto – no matter if you liked his version of Joker or not – put a lot of effort into creating a unique feel for his version of the Clown Prince of Crime and he created a version of the character unlike any other.. I, for one, liked his Joker, I felt he had potential and really deserved another crack at the role.

After all, Warners seemed hellbent on destroying the DC universe that Zack Snyder set in motion, with Ben Affleck gone, Henry Cavill likelt gone and now Leto and Jesse Eisenberg too likely to be through playing comic book villains. I feel the blame lies not with any of these actors, but with Warners being absolute idiots when it came ot looking after their talent.

The new report claims Leto believes he was strung along by the promise of his own standalone movie before Phillips’ movie got the go ahead, essentially ending Leto’s chances of a second Joker-centric movie.

“According to sources familiar with Leto’s behavior, when the Oscar-winning actor learned of the Phillips project, he not only complained bitterly to his agents at CAA, who also represent Phillips, but asked his music manager, Irving Azoff, to call the leader of Warners parent company (it’s unclear whether it was Time Warner’s Jeff Bewkes or AT&T’s Randall Stephenson, depending on the timing). The idea was to get Warners to kill the Phillips film.”

It must, however, be pointed out that someone from ‘Leto’s camp’ denies this happened.

The payoff of the new report is that Leto is likely not returning to the role of Joker, with him missing from both The Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey.

Honestly, I doubt Leto was that bothered by the second version of Joker – if you see the video below, he seems well aware that it’s happening and has given it his blessing. That said, at that stage he also seemed confident that his version of the Joker was retuning too, so who knows.

Honestly, I love Leto’s Joker – admittedly not as much as Pheonix’s Joker – and I think he’s getting a lot of unnecessary abuse from the media with the new movie having released and, on top of this, if he is through as Joker, then DC/Warners did mistreat him massively… so maybe it’s totally understandable if he’s not happy.

What say you all? Let(o) me know.
