One of our favourite movies of recent years has to be Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko.

It’s a crazy journey of a movie that bends the rules of cinema and story telling into a bizarrely dark masterpiece… and no matter how many times you watch it, it keeps giving you more to enjoy.

And now Kelly, chatting to HMV, says he has plans for a sequel – yes, he, like us all, seems to be ignoring the S. Darko movie – and would like to get moving on it very soon.

What?!

The director confirmed he has a couple of ideas in his head for movies, but getting back to Donnie’s universe is front of his mind: “I think there’s something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It’s big and expensive and I think there’s time to get to that. I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it.”

We’re conflicted on this. Donnie Darko is a gem of a movie and part of its charm is that it managed to deal with the biggest themes known to man but still feel like it was done on a really tight budget.

Don’t get us wrong, the movie looks gorgeous and the new Blu-ray restoration or the movie’s 15th anniversary is reported to be gorgeous, but the restrictions forced Kelly to be a real story teller with limited resources… if he was going to go big budget, we only hope he doesn’t lose sight of what made the first movie great

What say you all? Does another Donnie Darko movie sound good? Let us know…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
