I need sequels. Lots of sequels.
Yes, the new Matrix movie is still in development, so everyone can relax.
A little under two years ago, I reported that Cloverfield’s Drew Goddard was signed on to make a fifth Matrix movie, and then a year later, Warner Bros confirmed they were developing several legacy sequels, including Beetlejuice, Goonies, Gremlins, and The Matrix.
When Goddard was confirmed, Warner Bros’ president of production Jesse Ehrenreich said in a statement: “Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”
Cloverfield’s Drew Goddard signs on to write and direct new Matrix movie
Goddard himself said: “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life… and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
But since 2024, there has been no further news, but now Goddard, doing the press tour for Project Hail Mary, said in a new interview that the next Matrix is “still in the works. I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.”
It’s just nice to know it’s still in development and, as the first one not to come from the Wachowskis – that includes the terrible Matrix Resurrections – it’s great to know that someone of Goddard’s talent [Lost, Cabin in the Woods, Cloverfield, The Martian] is stepping up to take the reins.
So far, there’s no story or casting details known, though it is hoped that Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne (missing from the last instalment), and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity, but it’s also possible that Goddard will want to write a story based in another corner of The Matrix with a whole new cast.
Whatever it turns out to be, The Matrix is one of those franchises that we will always want to know what’s coming next.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
