Cloverfield’s Drew Goddard signs on to write and direct new Matrix movie

April 4th, 2024 by Marc Comments

It looks like we’re set to head into The Matrix once again as Warner Bros has announced a fifth movie is now in development… I’m not getting too excited after that last debacle though.

The new movie will be written and directed by Drew Goddard, he of Lost, Cloverfield and Cabin in the Woods fame and is the first time someone other than the Wachowskis handled the franchise.

While little is known about the plot of the movie, from the statement released by Warners, it seems possible that this will not be a continuation of the story of Neo, Trinity and Morpheus: “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago… and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said president of production Jesse Ehrman.

“The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making his new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

Marking 25 years since the release of the first Matrix movie, the announcement is certainly a welcome one and, on a personal note, it will hopefully end the story (or continue it) better than the terrible Matrix Resurrections that came out in 2021.

No, the new Matrix is not retconning the previous sequels

“It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life,” said Goddard in a statement. “Lana and Lilly’s [Wachowski] exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

Excited for a new Matrix movie with a fresh writer and director? It’s certainly a world that would lend itself to different voices and visions, so I am cautiously optimistic.

Let me know your thoughts…
