Fans of Young Guns and Young Guns II (1998/1990) might have reason to celebrate as it seems the third movie is finally happening.
In an official press release from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, it’s confirmed that star of the first two movies, Emilio Estevez will direct and star in the third movie which is no longer called Alias Billy the Kid: “The original ‘Young Guns’ films showcased New Mexico’s stunning landscapes to the world and helped establish our state as a premier filming destination,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham. “‘Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive’ will add to this legacy, further solidifying New Mexico’s place in the national film industry.”
Estevez himself revealed, below, that the movie will be filmed in New Mexico rather than Australia or any other country because he feels that a movie about the Old West should be filmed there.
The press release also confirms the return of two more of the original cast: Estevez will direct ‘Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive’ and reprise his role as Billy the Kid, alongside original cast members Lou Diamond Phillips and Christian Slater.
The third movie will be written by John Fusco, writer of the first two, bringing the story full circle.
Not too long ago, on the Inside of you Podcast, Lou Diamond Phillips said that his character Jose Chavez y Chavez was ready to get back in the saddle, literally, saying that Estevez had a great story to tell that continued the first two movies seamlessly, adding: “Not only would I consider it, I said ‘yes’ to it.”
While Charlie Sheen’s Dick Brewer and Kiefer Sutherland’s Doc Scurlock died on screen, the other deaths mentioned offscreen need not necessarily be set in stone, hence Christian Slater’s Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh coming back, despite reportedly having his head cut off off-screen: “Without giving too much away, those of us whose deaths were off-camera get to come back,” Phillips said.
So, there you have it, Young Guns III is moving ahead and it sounds like it might actually be historically accurate and, if it sticks to the template of the first two, be a lot of exciting fun.
Shot down in a blaze of glory? Not yet…
Thoughts? I know you have them.
