Even James Mangold didn’t realise Caliban was in another X-Men movie before he put him in Logan

Did you know that Caliban, played by Stephen Merchant in Logan, was already in the X-Men movies? And therefore is an established character?

It’s ok, it seems a lot of people didn’t realise.

Remember this guy in X-Men: Apocalypse?

Well guess what? That’s right… Caliban!

That was actor Tómas Lemarquis playing him and his character is the same one we meet again in Logan many, many years (in continuity) later.

In Apocalypse Caliban is used to find mutants who have fled, and in Logan it is made mention that Caliban turned his back on hunting mutants and that he was really good at it, so therefore we now know that the character is firmly established already. Cool.

However, it seems that it was all just a happy coincidence according to Logan helmer James Mangold: “It’s a funny, messy story of how so often these things are not as coordinated as everyone thinks. I actually had written him into our movie, and they didn’t know [he was] in Apocalypse, and then they kind of wrote it in their movie, and they cast someone in their movie and I had not seen it and was working away on mine.

“I just wanted to see this particular energy that we wrote, so I cast for what we were looking for and I love Stephen, I’m a huge fan of his.”

Weird, right?

Well, the X-Men movies tend to do their own thing with continuity anyway, so we guess it’s not the biggest oddity in the movies… but shouldn’t Mangold have at least watched all the other X-Men movies before doing Logan?

Ah well, it all worked out just fine in the end.
