Five more Power Rangers movies planned and a familiar face teased for the first sequel…

March 25th, 2017 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

In other news, it looks like the Power Rangers, whose first movie opened today, will be around for awhile in their current incarnation.

Haim Saban, Israeli media mogul, co-creator of Power Rangers, recent recipent of a Hollywood star and composer of the themes to Inspector Gadget, He-Man and Mysterious Cities of Gold has announced that we will see at least five more Power Rangersfilms, if the new film is a success.

“We already have a six-movie story arc,” Saban has now told Variety.

“If this film is as successful as I hope on March 24, on March 25 we’ll have the first story meeting for Movie No. 2.”   Saban has also said why the film has gone down a darker, grittier route, covering issues such as a lesbian Yellow Ranger and an autistic Blue Ranger: “Today’s young audience is much more sophisticated. Think about movies like Jungle Book and Arrival. The effects are mind-boggling. So does the young audience expect more? You bet they do – and they will have it.”

Alas, “more” also means dropping the tokusatsu feel for a CGI pixel-bath and Goldar now resembling a chocolately version of Armus fromStar Trek: The Next Generation. A photo has been posted on social media suggesting an old face.

SPOILERS!

On the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, the Green Ranger was the alternate identity of Tommy Oliver (played by Jason David Frank). Throughout the franchise’s run, Oliver has returned as a number of different rangers, including the White Ranger, the Red Ranger and, most recently, the Black Ranger. While Oliver doesn’t appear in the new film, Green Ranger fans would be wise to stay in their seats during the new movie’s end credits.

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids  (a few pushing thirty, mind – too old to be a teenager, too young to be a mother’s pet, as the Goodies sang) who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac), Power Rangers is written by John Gatins (Kong: Skull Island, Real Steel), Burk Sharpless (who sounds like a character in a 50s western or an 80s soap) and Matt Sazama (Dracula Untold), Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor), and that bad omen, Max “No, I’m not Kylo Ren!” Landis (Chronicle). Producers are Power Rangers creator Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Wyck Godfrey, and Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars, The Maze Runner franchise).
