Never underestimate the power of the internet nerd. When a trailer drops for an upcoming superhero movie, you can guarantee that it will be exhaustively analysed frame-by-frame. In other words, nothing will be missed. Nothing.

Most of the time, an Easter Egg or plot hint will be noticed immediately and go viral but sometimes, they take time. That’s true in the case of X-Men: Apocalypse. The second trailer for Bryan Singer’s trilogy-ending mutant spectacular dropped almost two weeks ago, but the potential cameo of a famous comic book character has just been spotted.

Yes, it looks as though X-Men: Apocalypse may feature Nathan Grey. A user on reddit (thanks to Squareeyed) spotted what looks to be Grey in the second X-Men Apocalypse trailer (see below):

X-Men

Nathan Grey was from the alternate Marvel Comics reality “Age Of Apocalypse,” and the son of Scott Summers and Jean Grey (a different timeline version of Cable). He was genetically modified by Mr Sinister and alternatively known as ‘X-Man.’ Considering that he sports that distinctive white streak in his hair and is heavily involved in the Apocalypse storyline, it’s entirely plausible to expect him appearing in the upcoming movie.

The extent of his involvement is not known, of course, but there is plenty of scope for Singer and Fox to explore Grey’s story in-depth, but not necessarily in this film. His inclusion in Apocalypse may well be an Easter Egg, teasing a future appearance. Singer has said he is open to continuing as an X-Men director after he helms the modern reboot of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, so Nate Grey may well appear then.

Synopsis: Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

In related news, FOX has just released these new character posters of Magneto, Storm, Angel and Psylocke, Apocalypse’s Four Horsemen:
