We loved Bumblebee.
Sure, it had problems, but overall it was a good course correction for the franchise that came before under Micheal Bay – and we’re not hating on Bay, we liked some of those movies – as Bumblebee focused on story and character more than any of the movies that went before.
Now, it seems Bumblebee, despite being tipped as the last of the Transformers franchise, is actually a fresh start for the universe.
It seems Hasbro, during the fourth quarter earnings conference call, has been confirmed as happy with Bumblebee’s performance and it has opened the door to new adventures.
And, if they all have a great a premise and quality as Bumblebee, then bring it on!
Hasbro’s Brian Goldner confirmed what we heard before, which was that other movies in the Transformers universe, related to Bumblebee will go ahead if the movie performs well enough.
And perform well enough it has: “On Transformers, in the fourth quarter was up both in the US and internationally, so up overall. We really successfully reengaged fans and families with Bumblebee. It’s done over $450 million globally,” Goldner said.
“The early indications as we enter the New Year are for a strong ESP and home entertainment window, and we believe that the enterprise for Bumblebee, including the film, is profitable for Hasbro go forward.
“Obviously we’re in the early days. Haven’t hit the home entertainment window yet. We haven’t even opened in Japan yet, and the movie is still in theaters.”
But movies are lily just the tip of the iceberg: “We knew In addition to the feature film, which is an important element and we are working on new films ideas with Paramount in partnership with Jim Giannopoulos and that team, and they’re fantastic, we also have television on Cartoon Network, Netflix offering, and preschool offering. So across the board, it’s a brand that really embodies our brand blueprint strategy, and we continue to believe very strongly in the power of the franchise.”
Looks like we have a lot of great Transformers content to look forward to in the coming years… proper designs for the ‘bots and plenty of cool character work? Bring it on…
