Ian McShane talks John Wick, Ballerina additional filming and more

April 8th, 2024 by Marc Comments

We’re big John Wick fans here at FTN Tower and we’ve made no secret of it, so we’re excited for the upcoming Ballerina movie, the first big screen spinoff from the core movies.

But it seems that the movie, starring Ana de Armas as the titular heroine, is now having some additional stuff filmed.

Speaking on The One Show , star of all the Wick movies and now Ballerina, Ian McShane, who plays Continental owner Winston Scott in the movies, revealed that the movie, which has been pushed back from this summer to summer 2025, is getting a lot of stuff added to it but he’s keen to stress it’s not reshoots and that director Len Wiseman is still fully involved.

More John Wick spinoffs, a High Table series and – yes! – an anime are in development!

“We’re going to Budapest. It’s not reshoots, it’s new shoots,” McShane says, “obviously, they’ve got to protect the franchise. About a year ago we did the movie. They looked at it and Chad [Stahelski] has come in … and they want to make it better because you have to protect the franchise.”

Stahelski has recently been appointed the overseer of all John Wick-related content, so it’s not surprising that he’s been hands-on and wants to make sure that Ballerina lives up to the standards the Wick movies have already set. Mcshane is asked about the spin-off John Wick prequel series The Continental and once again reiterates that he knows nothing about it as neither he nor Keanu Reeves were involved.

The star had previously spoken out about The Continental, saying: “I wouldn’t watch it. I have no intentions – nobody – I don’t think Keanu watched it, neither has Chad. It had nothing to do with our movies. It’s just a question of a TV company cashing in on the series and taking the option to [air?]. They never asked us about anything so why would I be interested in seeing it? I’m afraid their arrogance in getting the show out is beyond me so I wish them well. I think it’s come and gone, hasn’t it?”

Ian McShane reveals cool new details on John Wick spinoff, Ballerina

Perhaps this is why Stahelski is being so protective of Ballerina, ensuring that with the new project, he’s fully involved and ensuring nothing happens without his blessing.

Not that it matters but I really liked The Continental and felt it really added to the lore of the world and I don’t see why McShane is so bitter over the series as it was set many years before John Wick and, while his character is central, he’s a much younger man and Reeves’ Wick doesn’t appear at all.

Anyway, are you a fan of the Wick series? Are you excited for Ballerina? Did you enjoy The Continental? Let us know.
