Twenty years later and the aliens are returning for Independence Day… Resurgence.

Em, ok.

The title was announced at a press conference in Albuquerque, where director Roland Emmerich was joined on stage by returning cast members Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner and Judd Hirsch, along with newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward.

A direct sequel to the 1996 alien invasion movie, it’s believed that the movie will see the aliens returning to try to take earth again but this time they’ll find a planet that is ready, having using the recovered alien ships from the first movie to reverse engineer weapons capable of fighting back.

This seems to be supported by Emmerich’s tweets of the Moon Tug, a vehicle/walker piloted by  Liam Hemsworth (see below): “We call it in the film the War of ’96,” said Emmerich, “It’s like a post-World generation that’s unified, and that’s amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That’s resurgence.”

The movie is scheduled for June 24th, 2016, exactly 20 years after the first movie’s release. Aaaaaaaand we feel old. Again.

UPDATE:

Reveal teaser, em, revealed:

Will Smith’s character will respectfully be acknowledged in the sequel despite not coming back to do it…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
