John Boyega talks Attack the Block 2 and Jodie Whittaker up for return

Are things finally starting to move forward on the sequel to 20111’s cracking sci-fi movie, Attack the Block? Star John Boyega seems to think so.

The Star Wars star revealed back in 2022 that for the sequel, he was writing with original movie writer and director Joe Cornish and it seems that’s still the case and the actor, who made the movie about a block of flat in London being attacked by a bunch of alien nasties long before becoming a Stormtrooper, is still keen to return to the role of Moses, who he played at just 19, to fight the aliens again, saying they are “just cooking it to make it right for everyone.”

This process has been fantastic,” he goes on, talking about collaborating with Cornish, “The story has actually been presented by myself and Joe Cornish. We’ve collaborated heavily on making a story that makes sense for Moses and the other characters, and the new characters that will be coming up in the sequel too.

While the duo are working together, the script will be penned by Cornish and Boyega says it’s done and it’s great: “I’ve read it, man. It’s cool, bro. It’s cool. Yeah, I’ve read it. Joe Cornish has done a phenomenal job on his draft.”

As for the delay, it seems it’s mostly raising enough money to make it look good on the big screen – the alien critters in this universe have a very unique look, after all: “And we obviously need more money for those aliens,” he goes on, “we want it to look real good for that 2026 crowd. But for us it’s just about developing the story, and making sure Moses and the rest of the characters that we have left are fully hashed out before bringing it out and going to shoot. But I’m very passionate and very willing that we will shoot Attack the Block 2. It will happen.

You’re going to have to see, but the story is crazy. I’ve got to get in the gym, Jesus.”

So, will we be seeing the movie soon? Well, while he’s confident it’s going to happen, there’s still no dates in the diary: “We’re quite close. We’re getting there. Obviously, we don’t wanna release no dates to anybody because we wanna take care of the creative process. We have the main spine of the story, but we’re still in the lab, just making sure the story is right.”

But what of his co-star, former star of Doctor Who, Jodie Whittaker, who played fellow block resident Samantha Adams, left?

“There’s been talk of it for years, and I know no more than last time,” the actress says, adding: “Which is, is there going to be one? When is it shooting?”

Talking about her love for creature features and old sci-fi movies, Whittaker is keen to reteam with Boyega and Cornish for another crack at the aliens: “Absolutely, I would do it!

“I think something like Attack the Block, there’s always that chat. So hopefully that continues. I need to organise myself and send a self-tape to Joe Cornish. I can definitely pop up again – maybe I should send him an aggressive email!”

I’m a big fan of Attack the Block and I would be in the cinema in a heartbeat to see these guys all back for another bout of alien-stomping in a high-rise!

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em!
