We’ve been excited for the John Wick spin-off series, The Continental, for a while now and it seems it’s taken a big step forward with a director signing on.
From Hell and Menace II Society’s Albert Hughes will not direct the prequel for Starz.
The show, originally set to be a series, is now set to be a three-part, three-night limited event, with each of the three episodes being movie-length and sitting with a budget of approx $20m each.
In April this year (here) Kevin Beggs, president of Lionsgate Television Group spoke about the series, saying: “We’re way back in time, way back pre-John Wick and even pre-young John Wick, that character is not finding his way into the universe. We are in the John Wick universe, but it’s way back in time. Think about the Game of Thrones prequels before you know any of the players, but you do know the world.”
“What we’re exploring in The Continental is the young Winston [Ian McShane in the movies] and how it came to be that he and his team of confederates found their way into this hotel which we have met for the first time in the movie franchise 40 years later.”
The script was worked on by Chris Collins, Derek Kolstad and Chad Stahelski (John Wick director) have all worked on the scripts for the series.
It’s unlikely the series will arrive before the soon-to-film John Wick 4, so it’s still a while away.
