Over the years, there’s few stories that have been adapted as much as Charles Dickens immortal classic, A Christmas Carol.
From Alastair Sim to Albert Finney, from George C Scott to Patrick Stewart by way of Michael Caine and Jim Carrey, the iconic story of one man’s salvation at the hands of four spirits is likely more retold than any other.
And there’s a new, star-studded re-telling coming and, as nearly all that came before, this one will be worth keeping an eye on, if only due to the talent involved.
Nosferatu director Eggers signs on for Werwulf and Labyrinth sequel
Pearl and MaXXXine’s Ti West will direct Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, which Paramount are hoping to have in cinemas before next festive season, aiming for November 13, 2026.
Joining Depp’s Scrooge will be Oblivion’s Andrea Riseborough alongside Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley, Harry Potter’s Rupert Grint, and Hunger Games’ Sam Clafin. However, most interesting is the news that Severance’s Tramell Tillman will also star alongside the legend that is Ian McKellan. Word on the grapevine is that Tillman is the Ghost of Christmas Present.
In related news, this isn’t the only Christmas Carol project announced recently as Nosferatu and The VVitch’s Robert Eggers is also developing a retelling of the tale over at Warner Bros and while nothing is confirmed yet, it would seem his muse, as it were, Willem Dafoe, is who Eggers wants as Scrooge in his version. It’s unlikely this version will be happening anytime soon, though, as Eggers is currently still filming Werwulf with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and DaFoe and is still attached to direct the Labyrinth sequel, which presumably will come before Dickens’ tale.
So, two very high-profile retellings of A Christmas Carol are in development and both very likely will have more horrific slants than the story usually has.
I’m onboard for both.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
