If you’re a fan of the recent movies of Gothic film-maker Robert Eggers AND a fan of 80s iconic movies, then have I got a couple of big bits of news for you!
Following on from he success of Nosferatu, director Rober Eggers has lined up is next two big projects.
While celebrating Nosferatu’s nominations for Cinematography, Costume Design, Production Design and Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, Eggers, left, has revealed that he will be writing and directing the sequel to Labyrinth.
The 1986 classic Jim Henson movie had a young girl, Sarah, played by Jennifer Connolly on a quest to rescue her baby brother from the Goblin King, played by the late David Bowie, it’s a classic for a lot of reasons and may be one of the most perfect Christmas season watches ever made, so it’s no small undertaking to sign on for a new movie.
Nosferatu director Robert Eggers circling Labyrinth update as next project
The movie, I’m assured, is a sequel to the original movie (yay!) and Eggers and co-writer Sjón are currently developing the script.
I first wrote that Eggers was in consideration for the sequel back in December (here) where I wrote:
There has been rumblings over the years of reboots and sequels, there’s been comics and other expanded lore but the 1986 movie still sits, untouchable and standalone as a children’s classic that terrifies the kids; so, I can see why Eggers is attached to the project.

The original movie was directed by the legendary Jim Henson himself and recently his son, Brian Henson – who directed The Muppet Christmas Carol – was asked about a return to the world of Labyrinth and he said it was “a project that we are very excited about.”
Eggers is a filmmaker to be reckoned with, so I reckon this is one to watch for sure… but will we see Connolly back as a grown-up Sarah?
In related news, Eggers has signed on to make another journey into the world of horror before he gets lost in the Labyrinth.
Following on from Witches – The VVitch – and Vampires – Nosferatu – Eggers will next direct Werwulf which is, once again, is co-writing with Sjón.
While there are no details on the movie for now, it’s clear that it’s going to be a werewolf movie. We do know it’s to be set in 13th-century England with “dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English.” – Eggers has recently said he has no desire to make a modern day-set movie, colourfully saying the very notion of filming a car makes him feel ill – so once again, this will be a period piece like Northman, The Lighthouse and all his movies so far.
The movie will be shot in colour, Eggers loves filming in black and white, and the aim as of right now, is for Focus Pictures to give it a Christmas Day 2026 release, exactly two years after the release of Nosferatu this past Christmas season.
