Man, I had pretty much forgotten this was even a thing!
The Cliffhanger reboot movie, which I last reported on back in 2024 (below), confirming Sylvester Stallone has left the project and that it would now star Lily James, is finally coming out… next year.
Stallone departs Cliffhanger sequel, Lily James takes his place
Coming in with a $100m budget, the movie, which also stars Pearce Brosnan, will hit cinemas on February 24, 2027.
The movie was originally set to be distributed by Row K but after they had financial issues, the movie ended up sitting on the shelf until Neon stepped in, picking the rights to distribute instead.
Word is that the movie has tested very well with audiences.
The movie had originally had Stallone and director Ric Roman Waugh attached but creative differences – that ol’ chestnut – threw a spanner in the works, leading to the movie becoming a full reboot with, presumably, no connection to the 1993 action movie.
Carry-On director Jaume Collett-Sera helmed the new movie.
While staying with her father Ray Cooper (Brosnan), an experienced mountaineer who runs a luxury chalet in the Dolomites, Naomi (James) and her sister Sydney join a weekend excursion with the son of a billionaire.
When the group is ambushed by a gang of kidnappers, Naomi witnesses the attack and narrowly escapes. Forced into hiding, she must summon her courage to save Sydney and her father before it is too late.
I’m a big, big fan of the original movie and was excited when a sequel was first announced, but I’m finding it hard to muster any excitement for this reboot. That said, I do really like Brosnan and James and Collett-Sera is a capable director, so I’m certainly not writing this one off.
Thoughts on this one? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
Yes! Stallone returning as Gabe Walker for cliffhanger sequel
